Ophelia is a torn character. She is conflicted between loving Hamlet and obeying her father's orders to stay away from him. She chooses to obey her father, but receives many letters and visits from Hamlet of which she tries to refuse. She is frightened by Hamlet's new found madness and turns to her father for guidance. Polonius tells her that he knows what must be done and sets out to spy on Hamlet. One night, Hamlet accidentally murders Polonius. As a result, Ophelia loses her mind and sinks into madness. Her grief over her father's death and her madness make her forget about her love for Hamlet. While she is in a meadow with a brook picking flowers, she falls into the water. She lets the water pull her down and she drowns. The song, "Never Let Me Go", by Florence + The Machine coincides with Ophelia as the song is about a girl who willingly drowns herself by going into the ocean and sinking down into its depths. Ophelia's grief is more powerful than her will to live, so she does nothing to save herself from her imminent fate.
