Polonius is a blithering buffoon Polonius enjoys speaking without saying anything of use. He will only do the things that will make him look good, for instance when he tells Ophelia that he will tell the king and queen why Hamlet is insane. he enjoys spying on people, particularly Hamlet, as he is able to gain information that makes him seem knowledgeable. Polonius is supposed to be the king and queen's advisor, but he only advises them on things that would benefit them and/or him personally rather than the whole kingdom. Polonius's spying ends up being his downfall as he is killed by Hamlet while he is spying on a conversation between Gertrude and Hamlet. The song, "Ballad of a Politician", by Regina Spektor suits Polonius as he tries to suck up and make himself look good to the people above him politically and around him and that is what a politician does.
